Since  the best-selling and beloved ENCYCLOPEDIA  OF NEW YORK CITY first appeared on shelves 15 years ago, the Big Apple has  changed in so many ways. The World Trade Center no  longer dominates the skyline, a billionaire businessman named Bloomberg has  become the first three-term mayor in 70 years, Chelsea Piers, the High Line,  and DUMBO are now familiar terms, and Williamsburg, the South Bronx, and the  Lower East Side have been transformed from once-dismal areas into  hot spots. To keep up with these vast  and intriguing changes, this definitive, one-volume  resource has been revised and expanded. This fall, Yale University Press launches  the much-anticipated ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NEW YORK CITY, SECOND  EDITION (December 1, 2010; $65.00).

“In 2010, New   York subways and buses are packed, crime is down, and renovated  parks and new bike paths have changed the way people experience the city,”  explains editor and prize-winning Columbia   University historian  Kenneth T. Jackson. “We’ve expanded our coverage to appeal even more to people  everywhere who love the city and are intrigued by its history.”

As  a result, the new edition features more than 5,000  substantially revised entries, including 800 new entries, that help complete  the story of New York.  From Air Train to E-ZPass, September 11, 2001 to public order, and Yankee  Stadium to Bernard Madoff, new material spans subjects such as architecture,  politics, business, sports, the arts, and more. In addition, all previous  entries have been updated to reflect the impact of the past two decades as well  as include more in depth coverage of subject areas previously underserved. There  are more than 400 new illustrations, including updated maps and contemporary  photographs.

The  first edition of THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NEW  YORK CITY was a success by every measure, earning  worldwide acclaim and several awards for reference excellence, and selling out  its first printing before it was officially published.  Nearly 75,000 copies have been sold to date,  and with the launch of the second edition, THE ENCYCLOPEDIA maintains its prominent position as the one-stop  guide to all things New York City.
